This Standard sets out the requirements for materials suitable for use as a pliable building membrane (also known as underlay) in any of the following circumstances:
(a) When it is intended to act as a sarking membrane or thermal insulation or a vapour barrier when installed in a building structure.
(b) When installed either independently, or as a facing to other materials such as insulation materials.
(c) When installed in domestic, commercial or industrial buildings.
Materials for use in air-handling ducts are generally outside the scope of this Standard.
However, this document may be called up by a future the air-handling duct Standard.
Vapour barriers used under concrete slabs are outside the scope of this Standard.
NOTES:
1 Methods for determining compliance with this Standard are given in Appendix A.
2 Thermal insulation requirements are specified in AS 2627.
3 This Standard will be referenced in the Building Code of Australia by way of BCA Amendment 7 intended for publication in October 1994, thereby superseding the previous editions of AS 1736 — 1975 and AS 1903 — 1976, which will be withdrawn 12 months from the date of publication of this Standard.
Users are advised that when BCA Amendment 7 is issued, it will not necessarily be gazetted in each State/Territory at the time of printing.
