Stonemasonry is construction work using natural or artificial stone laid unit by unit and set in mortar.

Stonemasonry work includes:

Internal or external stone walls stone veneer facing or cladding stonemasonry staircases stonemasonry pointing
Minor non-structural concreting needed to support stonemasonry work
Flashing related to stonemasonry work
Stone flagging
Stonemasonry retaining walls that do not need approval under the Local Government Act 1993 (retaining walls that need this approval need to be built by people who hold a licence in structural landscaping).

Note: the licensing categories of bricklaying and stonemasonry do not include concreting work that is structural or provides structural support (eg concrete slabs, concrete footings).

This is except for footings for free standing fences or walls that are only going to bear the weight of the parts that make up the fence or wall.

For example, stonemasonry does not include concrete footings for dwelling walls or retaining walls.
