NSW Fair Trading
Information about t a licence or certificate in underpinning and piering.
You must have a licence before you do any residential building work in NSW, including underpinning and piering, valued at more than $5000 (incl GST) in labour and materials.
Underpinning is constructing a new support structure under a wall, column or footings of a building without removing the superstructure to:
prevent a collapse due to too much settlement, or any other failure condition and/or
allow the loads on a building to be increased; and/or,
allow the ground level inside or outside a building to be lowered. Underpinning is often done together with shoring.
Piering is putting in a column or post to support a superstructure, such as beams or floor bearers.
To learn more about what is considered underpinning and piering, see the definition in schedule 4 of the Home Building Regulation 2014.
