This Standard provides an unambiguous system for assigning designations to refrigerants. It also establishes a system for assigning a safety classification to refrigerants based on toxicity and flammability data, and provides a means of determining the refrigerant concentration limit.

Specifies minimum requirements for the operation and maintenance of air-handling and water systems of buildings for the purposes of microbial control. It does not include requirements for refrigerated room airconditioners and non-ducted split systems.

Specifies a simple means of referring to common refrigerants instead of using the chemical name, formula, or trade name. It also establishes a uniform system to be used in assigning the proper reference number and classification to refrigerants; the system for refrigerant classification is defined and physical data of common refrigerants listed.

Specifies requirements for safety and environmental aspects in relation to operation, maintenance and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery, reuse and disposal of all types of refrigerant, refrigerant oil, heat transfer fluid, refrigerating system and part thereof.

Specifies the requirements for damp-proof course and flashing materials of the sheet membrane, strip and collar type for use in building construction.

Provides design values of snow and ice actions for use in structural design; it is intended to be used in conjunction with AS/NZS 1170.0, which gives the procedure for structural design; snow regions are defined and ground snow loads are provided for a range of annual probabilities of exceedance; other factors cover the environment around the structure, the geometry of the structure and the effect of winds on snow distribution.

The 2014 edition of AS/NZS 1596 is amended as follows.

Specifies materials, design, construction, installation, testing and maintenance requirements for below ground plastics gas distribution networks to be used in conjunction with AS/NZS 4645.1, for the distribution of fuel gas suitable for domestic, commercial or industrial uses.
